What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are a “cap” that is placed over your tooth and covers it up. They can be made out of a variety of different materials, such as:

  • Metals
  • Porcelain
  • Resin
  • Ceramic

This cap that is placed over your tooth helps to restore it and give it the appearance of a healthy whole tooth. It is usually used by patients that have damaged teeth or teeth that are or have become misshapen. The dental crown before and after will restore it and give it back its strength, look, and size. Teeth crowns are a long-term solution to many different dental issues.

Who Opts For A Dental Crown?

There are multiple reasons for patients to opt for a dental crown including the incredible change that a dental crown before and after can provide. Other reasons include:

  • Protecting a weak tooth: Teeth can become weaker with age and decay and this can cause the tooth to crack and eventually disintegrate. The dental crown prevents that from happening
  • Restoration: Dental crowns can restore a broken or severely worn tooth to its former appearance
  • Protection: Teeth with large fillings are covered to protect the remaining tooth. Dental crowns can also ensure a tooth that has had a root canal is covered and protected
  • Keeping bridges and implants in place: Dental crowns can help keep a dental bridge or a dental implant in place
  • Natural-looking teeth: Covering misshapen or severely discoloured teeth to appear more natural

Materials That Dental Crowns Are Made With

Dental crowns can be made out of a variety of materials based on the patients’ needs, allergies and the longevity required. The dental cost in Turkey will ultimately depend on which material your crowns are made with.  Each material has its own set of advantages and disadvantages to consider. Let’s go over each of the different materials that dental crowns are made with.

Metal Crowns

There are several different metals that are safe to use as a dental crown and will affect the dental crown before and after. Metals that are used include gold, palladium, nickel, and chromium.

The advantages of metal dental crowns:

  • Rarely chip or break
  • Last longer than other crowns
  • Only a small amount of your tooth needs to be removed
  • Can withstand harsher chewing and biting forces

The disadvantages of metal dental crowns:

  • The colour of the metal makes it obvious it’s a crown. Most patients prefer metal crowns to be on their molars and out of sight.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal Crowns

This type of dental crown material can be used in dental crowns before and after and is a good option for both your front teeth and your back teeth.

The advantages of porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns:

  • It can be matched to the colour of your teeth
  • It is durable and should last for a long time period
  • Looks completely natural

The disadvantage of porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns:

  • Sometimes the metal can be seen under the porcelain cap making it look unnatural
  • Porcelain can break and expose the metal underneath
  • It can wear down the teeth that come into contact with the cap after a period of time

All-Resin Crowns

A composite resin crown can be moulded to fit your teeth and is one of the cheapest dental crowns available. It is another option for dental crowns before and after and can be placed anywhere in your mouth but is usually in the front.

Advantages to the all-resin dental crowns:

  • Can be colour matched to your teeth
  • Blends in perfectly in your mouth
  • Usually does not cause damage to your surrounding teeth
  • Cost-saving option

Disadvantages to the all-resin dental crowns:

  • More prone to breakage than some of the other materials
  • Resin can become stained after a period of time – Smokers are usually advised against using this material as a dental crown
  • Faster wear down compared to other dental crown materials

All-Ceramic or All-Porcelain Crowns

These materials are fantastic options for individuals who suffer from metal allergies as they can receive these dental crowns.

Advantages of all-ceramic or all-porcelain crows:

  • The best natural colour match dental crown can be produced
  • The most natural-looking dental crown available
  • They are long-lasting
  • Patients with metal allergies can receive the

Disadvantages of all-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns:

  • They are not as strong as metal dental crowns or porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns
  • They can wear down teeth that come into contact with them

The Procedure For Receiving A Dental Crown

With any procedure, it is important to know what is planned for you and how the procedure is going to work from the beginning right through to the final touches to ensure your dental crowns before and after are comfortable and successful.

  1. When you first arrive at the clinic or dentist’s office, the dentist will examine your teeth and inform you about the condition of the tooth and what he or she will advise. They may also take an x-ray in order to confirm that a dental crown is the best option for you. It is possible for the dentist to perform a root canal if the tooth has any form of tooth decay, is a risk for infection or there is an injury to the tooth’s pulp. The pulp of the tooth is the inside of the tooth where your nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue can be found. This is part of the dental crowns before and after inspection.
  2. The tooth that is receiving the dental tooth is filed down at the top and on the sides to ensure the cap can just slip on and that there is enough space for it. The amount of filing down that is required will depend on the type of dental crown chosen or advised. If there is not enough tooth remaining in order for a dental crown to be placed, the dentist will rebuild your tooth in such a manner that the dental crown can be inserted.
  3. The dentist will then use a paste or a putty to make an impression of your teeth and their structure, in order for the crown to be made and to ensure that the crown made does not influence your bite. This will allow the dental crown to feel more comfortable, and natural and ensure there is minimal wear on the dental crown.
  4. Depending on your dentist and the technology that they have on hand, you can either receive your dental crown after a few hours or receive a temporary crown while the permanent crown is manufactured. This can take up to 3 weeks, depending on your region.
  5. During this part of the procedure, the dental crown is placed in position and comfortability is checked. If everything is in order then the crown is cemented into that position permanently. The tooth structure and sensitivity will determine if a local anaesthetic is used.

Possible Problems That Can Develop With Dental Crowns

Eventhough dental crown is a safe procedure, there are different problems that can emerge during your dental crowns before and after the procedure. It is important to know what you might experience. The possible problems include:

    • Discomfort or Sensitivity: Depending on why you receive a dental crown, it is possible for the nerve to still be within the tooth. This will cause the tooth to be sensitive when the anaesthesia starts to wear off. You may experience hot and cold sensations in that tooth. Using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth may help ease this sensation. If you experience pain when biting down, call your dentist as it is possible that the crown is too high. This problem is easily remedied.
    • Chipped Dental Crown: When the dental crown that is placed is made from porcelain, it is possible for the dental crown to become chipped. Small chips can usually be repaired by a dentist. If the chip is large or there are multiple chips on the tooth, then the dental crown may need replacement.
    • Loose Dental Crown: It is possible for the dental crown to become loose over time due to the cement holding it in place, and washing out. This problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible, as bacteria can enter where the cement is washed out and cause tooth decay on the remaining tooth structure.
    • Dental Crown Falls Off: It is possible for the dental crown to fall off. Should this happen, contact your dentist immediately and they will advise you on how to treat the dental crown and the underlying tooth until an appointment can be made and the dental crown can be reattached. It may also be necessary to have a new dental crown made depending on the reason for falling out.
    • Allergic Reaction: Although it is extremely rare to have an allergic reaction from either the metal or the porcelain that is used in dental crows. Contact your dentist to have a different dental crown made.
    • Dark Line On Crowned Tooth: If you should see a dark line next to the gum line of your dental-crowned tooth, do not be alarmed if you have a porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crown. It is the metal showing through.
