Your Hair transplant process

what to expect

Your Hair Transplant Process

Once you have made the decision that you’re getting a hair transplant, there are steps to follow to ensure your procedure goes off without a hitch. That’s from the moment you do your initial consultation up until the moment you walk away after your post-op follow-up visit (online or offline).

1. Hair Transplant Pre- Consultation

A pre-consultation is provided, either online or at our premises, where your current situation, your habits and your hair is discussed. The outcome of the pre-consultation is normally to assess if you are a good candidate for a transplantation, and to discuss alternatives to a transplantation.

2. Your Pre-Procedural Consultation

Our friendly reception team will be waiting to greet you on your arrival arriving for your consultation to the premises. The first thing the team will organise is to have high-resolution photos taken and analyse your hair and your scalp. The photos will serve as a visual record of your condition before any procedure..

Your Assessment & Evaluation For Treatment

The next step is meeting your doctor and with him discuss what it is you are hoping to achieve.
Your doctor will have several questions to ask you to collect information on your situation. The questions that will cover your medical history, age and prevalence of any inherited symptoms, scalp condition, habits and others.
Following your in-depth assessment, your doctor will conduct a physical examination of the affected area, whether it’s the scalp, eyebrows, or beard regions.
The doctor will use special equipment for this examination; like a hand-held microscope and a micrometre. Both these allow the doctor to get a better look at details such as:
  • Scalp condition
  • Hair density
  • Follicular density
  • Size of your donor and recipient areas to calculate your donor capacity
From the above data, and based on your gender, ethnicity, hair type, level of hair loss, and expectations, the doctor will give a forecast of the necessary procedure and its expected results. The forecast will take into account the results from previous patients who had data similar to yours to assess and calculate what areas that hair needs to be transplanted to.
After evaluating all the above data, the doctor will together with yourself conclude the objective of the procedure and discuss any additional treatments you need to undergo to make you hair healthier.

Testing

Following this, a few tests will need to be done to assess your overall health. These normally include a blood test and scalp test. The results will then get reviewed by your doctor.

Planning

If your tests are ok, your doctor will proceed with creating your hair transplant program. Based on the procedure the doctor may need to shave the donor areas to obtain additional information. Additionally, the doctor will also check the hair and follicular density in different areas of the scalp.
Once all the necessary data has been collected, the doctor will proceed to mark out the sections that require work done. In cases where the hairline needs to get amended, the doctor will draw out the ideal hairline. This will be based on your preference as well as your facial structure. It will also serve as a point to learn what your expectations are. Your surgeon will inform you what your chances are of attaining the desired results based on their analysis of your condition.
Once you’ve both agreed on the outcome, more photos are taken to serve as the reference point for the procedure. After you leave, the medical team will meet to discuss and prepare for your surgery.

3. Procedure

On arrival to the hospital for your procedure you will be welcomed and escorted to a recreation room. There, you’ll get to pick out the entertainment you would like for the duration of the procedure. Additionally, the doctors will also assess you to identify your inconvenience thresholds to medicate you accordingly.

Set Up Of Surgical Rooms

Whilst you wait for the procedure, the medical team ensures they have all the sterilised tools for the operation. Before the start of the procedure, you will be given a surgical gown to change into.
Then the team will get you settled into the surgical chair.
You will have monitoring equipment attached to you, to keep track of your vitals. You’ll will normally also receive local anaesthesia to the donor areas through a series of injections around the region.

Follicle Extraction

Whether the procedure you’re having is a DHI or FUE procedure, hair follicles have to be extracted from the donor area. Micromotor punches are used for the hair follicle extraction stage. These come in different sizes to suit your hair follicle size. Extractions are done manually to reduce any risk of damaging the scalp around the donor area. Once the necessary donor grafts have been extracted, an antibiotic cream is applied to your scalp to reduce the risk of infection. In case you need a break, go ahead and request one.

Graft Analysis

After removal, each graft is analysed to ensure its viability. They’re then placed in a petri dish with a Hypotermosol and Liposomal ATP solution. The petri dishes are then placed over a chilling device as they await implantation. The grafts must stay moist while awaiting the implantation process.

Incisions

You then get positioned in a way that allows the doctor easy access to your graft recipient areas without causing you any discomfort. The donor area gets anaesthetised. Then incisions are made with the size of the donor grafts in mind. To get these just right, they’re done using a loupe magnifier. The doctor also takes into consideration the surrounding hair as well as the proper angle of implantation to create a natural-looking hair growth pattern- to mimic your old hair. Once all the incisions are made, you and the team can take a lunch break.

Graft Implantation

After a short break, everyone returns to the surgical room for the graft implantation process. This entails placing the donor grafts into the incision sites in the recipient area. These must be placed in the direction determined by the incisions previously made. A technician is assigned to monitor the implantation process. Tools are used to ensure there is no damage to the grafts during placement. Once complete, another technician checks each graft to ensure they’ve all been placed in the prescribed pattern.

Application

On completion of the procedure, the doctor will again inspect all the inserted donor hair follicles.

Kit

After ensuring all is well, you will be provided with post-op instructions and an aftercare kit. The kit contains items such as gauze, liposomal ATP spray, post-op medications, and an icepack. The doctor will then place a special cap on your head before releasing you from the hospital.

4. Post Procedural Consultation

Normally, you will be expected to visit the hospital the within 48 hours for a detailed check-up that also includes a hair treatments and potential dermatological treatments of your scalp.

5. Post Consultations

You will following the post procedural consultation return to your home, and we expect to have post consultations with you on a monthly basis for 6 months, to follow up on the hair growth and consult you related to your enquiries during such period.
